Puppy Socialisation from 8 to 10 weeks - Neo the Xoloitzcuintli
Puppy Diaries - Socialisation with Neo the Xoloitzcuintli, 8 to 10 weeks
Here is a little video I've put together of what we've done with Neo with his socialisation and training in weeks 8 to 10 (if you can make it all the way through)
In these last 2 weeks, we've introduced Neo to lots of novelty, so he gains confidence with walking along different surfaces, hearing different noises, going inside dark places and climbing over things.
He's also met lots of adults, kids, vaccinated dogs, cats, goats, farm animals etc.
We've carried Neo to lots of new places before his vaccinations are completed, so he gets to experience the big wide world whilst he is young, bringing a mat with us, so he can see the world from the ground too. We've also arranged for known people and vaccinated dogs to come see us here in our garden, so he can experience meeting people/dogs from the ground (the world is a very different place from arms to ground, so its important they get time to experience both, and at their pace).
It's important when meeting anyone, that our puppies have a choice. So no one was allowed to touch Neo when he was in my arms, and instead he was put on the floor so he had a choice to greet in his own time, or not. We also carefully selected the dogs he interacted with, ensuring these were friendly dogs, and greeting were kept short. The rest of his experiences with dogs has been looking and then engaging with me instead, using DMT whenever he felt worried.
We've also made a start on some basic training, focusing on teaching him 'how' to learn, and growing his confidence.
