About the Adolescent Class

We run classes in Farnham and Basingstoke, run by instructor Dale Foley.

The Adolescent class is a combination of basic training, socialisation and solving behaviour problems. The whole family is welcome to attend.  The Adolescent class runs for 6 weeks (1 x 45 minute lesson per week).

When to start

The Adolescent Class is open to all dogs from 20 weeks old and there is no upper age limit.  This class is the perfect place to start if your dog has had little or no training or requires a refresher in the basics.  The next level up from this class is our Puppy 2 course.

The Adolescent / Adult Dog Training exercises include:

  • Attention to owner
  • Jazz up and Settle down
  • Walk on lead without pulling
  • Come when called
  • Manners greeting people without jumping
  • Sit and Lie down on first command
  • Wait at doorways, for meals and in a down stay.
  • Fetch & Drop
  • Leave it (no stealing)
  • Socialisation with dogs and people (no aggressive dogs please)

Class Structure

First-time classes for adolescent and adult dogs are usually pretty wild and woolly affairs. Dogs bark and strain on lead and eyeball the other dogs. The dogs blow off food and toy lures, they blow off any attempts at training and they blow off their owners, which, of course, is why most people have come to class.

Training adolescent and adult dogs can be frustrating and overwhelming, but this is not the fault of the dogs, or their owners, rather it is the fault of trying to use inappropriate training techniques and lack of early training.

Training Methods

The relaxed classical conditioning and the absolutely unique all-or-none reward training techniques make training adult dogs simple, effective, surprisingly calm, and above all, rewarding.

Initial exercises focus on regaining attention, building confidence, calming, and settling-down. During the innovative attention-training exercises, most dogs learn to walk calmly on leash and to sit stay as a bonus. All-or-none reward training techniques are simply magical.

Once you have learned to control your dog's energy and exuberance and your dog has acquired some impulse control and now offers healthy attention, it is a much easier prospect to use lure/reward training techniques to teach the basic skills needed for a mannerly pet dog - sit, down, stand, stay, walking on-leash and polite greetings - and how to apply them in your day-to-day life.

Final Week & Certificates

On the final week, we have some fun and relaxed competitions to test your dogs skills.  Certificates and Rosettes are handed out for course completion and competition winners.

We also offer the opportunity to be awarded with an APDT Foundation Award Certificate.  This is the Association of Pet Dog Trainers version of the Kennel Club Awards.

These classes are for people-friendly and dog-friendly dogs; class is not the place to address a serious behavior problem. For the most part, the class is taught on-lead until we are certain that all dogs are people-friendly and dog-friendly and safe to play and train off-lead. If your dog is reactive towards other dogs, or if your dog is fearful or unfriendly to people, you need a private consultation and we'll be happy to provide you with several referrals.

Our classes are very popular and book up very quickly. Enrolments are accepted on a first come/first served basis, so early booking is a must. Please see below for the next course start dates and availability.
