Classes are kept as stress free as possible so that both you and your puppy can enjoy classes. Each course runs for 6 weeks (1 x 45 minute lesson per week). Training Methods We use positive training methods, comprising of lure/reward training which is easy and extremely effective for training young puppies. We show you how to use a variety of rewards such as play, praise, touch and treats to help you communicate with your puppy and build a lasting bond. Hand signals and voice commands are introduced early on to make training easy and fun. Puppy 1 will lay the groundwork for Puppy 2 where we show you how to work with your dog at a distance and off lead. Free Puppy Booklets You will receive a free puppy pack before the class starts and there will be time in class to discuss toilet training, play biting, nipping & chasing, jumping up and stealing. You will also receive two free downloadable books: Before and After you get your puppy by Ian Dunbar. If you are struggling with your puppy at home, a puppy home-visit before your first training class is an excellent idea.

Class Structure Classes are taught 20% off-lead to maximize dog-dog play (learning bite inhibition) and socialisation with people, especially strangers, men and children. Puppies are trained within the play session so that; 1. Owners may learn to calm down and control their puppies when excited and distracted and 2. Play may be used as the ultimate reward for each short training interlude. Early puppy classes are essential to ensure that puppies develop bite inhibition and become people-friendly, dog-friendly and mannerly around people and other dogs. Learning bite inhibition and socialisation are easy and enjoyable endeavors in puppyhood, but they are extremely developmentally time-sensitive. If your puppy does not acquire reliable bite inhibition in puppyhood, he will become potentially dangerous as an adult. If your puppy is not thoroughly socialised in puppyhood, remedial socialisation will take many months (and maybe years) and essentially, your dog will never be the relaxed and confident dog that s/he could have been.
Final Week & Certificates You are tested throughout the course, so there is no scary test at the end. On the final week, we run some fun competitions where you can win rosettes for your puppy. Certificates are also handed out for course completion. Recommended courses: We highly recommend that you take your puppy through Puppy 1, 2 and 3 to ensure that your puppy remains sociable and in control on and off lead right through to adult-hood. It is also a good idea to supplement your indoor training by attending the weekly outdoor workshops. See below for a list of course start dates and enrollment forms.
